Ben Affleck Reveals The Surprising Reason He’s No Longer Batman

Warner Bros announced the release date for its standalone Batman movie last month, but there is one thing that the company didn’t want to reveal. For years now, rumors were circulating that Ben Affleck won’t play Batman anymore. The star has confirmed the news on an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He was asked about his status as Batman and gave a response that might disappoint his fans:

"I have decided... I tried to direct a version of it, worked with a really good screenwriter, but couldn't come up with a version. Couldn't crack it. So I thought it was time to let someone else take a shot at it and they got some really good people," he told Jimmy Kimmel.

The Batman was first announced in 2016 when Affleck agreed to star, co-write and direct the movie. In an unexpected turn of events, last month the actor retweeted Deadline's story that he would no longer play the role. However, the speculations about his Batman status have appeared way earlier. First, he quit directing the movie when Reeves came on board. Matt Reeves then announced that he won't use Ben Affleck’s script for the movie. Last month the director revealed what fans should expect from the upcoming The Batman:

"It's very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It's more Batman in his detective mode than we've seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He's supposed to be the world's greatest detective, and that's not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been," he said.

On the other hand, Ben Affleck finally decided to put the years-long rumors to an end by confirming that he will no longer wear Batman’s cape. The actor is hanging up his cape after playing Batman in three movies: “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Suicide Squad,” and “Justice League.” Apparently, he felt that he is no longer the right person for the role and decided to drop out of the entire movie. In the meantime, he is busy working on the adaptation of Kate Alice Marshall’s novel “I Am Still Alive.”  He will also appear in the movie “Torrance,” a Gavin O’Connor-directed drama, the Netflix thriller Triple Frontier, and Dee Rees’ crime drama “The Last Thing He Wanted.” It seems that for now, he is more focused on acting rather than directing.

As for The Batman, there is still quite a wait until the movie hits the theaters. The official release date is June 25, 2021. Warner Bros and Matt Reeves have yet to reveal who will play the Caped Crusader in the upcoming movie. Rumor has it that the director is looking for a younger actor in his 20s and his 30s at the oldest to get in the role of Bruce Wayne. What do you think, who should take up the cape of one of Hollywood’s most popular superheroes?
